This test method determines of total solid of Nitrocellulose (NC) and liquid like an acrylic binder, Protein binder, Laque, polyurethane, Fat liquor, Pigments, and dye, etc, materials.
APPARATUS
a). Chemical Weighing Balance.
b). Thermostatically Controlled Oven.
c). S.S. spatula.
d). Desiccators.
e). Petri dish ( Dia 75 mm)
f). Glass rod (approx. 100 mm in length)

Solid Determination for Liquid MaterialsÂ
a). Switch on the oven and maintain its temperature at 120+/-20 C. Weigh a clean and dry empty Petri dish with the glass rod by a chemical balance. Let its weight be (A).
b). Transfer about 1 gm. sample to the Petri dish using an S.S. spatula and weigh it. Let its weight be (B).
(b). Make sure that the sample is evenly distributed over the surface of the dish.
c). Put the Petri dish & the rod with the sample in the oven and keep it at 120.0 C for 1 hour. Remove the dish from the oven after a short period of heating. Stir the material with the glass rod to break up any surface skin and replace the dish and rod in the oven.
d). At the end of 1 hour take out the Petri dish and rod and keep them in a desiccator for cooling
e). Weigh the cooled Petri dish and the rod; let its weight be (C).
Solids Content FormulaÂ
 \[Solid Content (%) = (Weight C - Weight A) / (Weight B - Weight A) * 100\]
Where
Weight C: The weight of the sample after drying (containing only solids).
Weight A: The weight of the empty petri dish (tare weight).
Weight B: The weight of the petri dish with the wet sample (before drying).

DETERMINATION OF SOLID CONTENT OF NITROCELLULOSEÂ
APPARATUS
a). Chemical Weighing Balance.
b). Water Bath
c). 250 ml Glass Beakers.
d). Glass rod (approx.100mm in length)
e). Desiccator
PROCEDURE
a) Firstly weigh the empty 250 ml beaker with a glass rod. (A)
b). Now weigh the 5 gm. Nitrocellulose in 250 ml Beaker. (B)
c). Now transfer the beaker to a water bath filled with water and start heating. (Check the water in the water bath from time to time if water evaporates then fill the water bath again with water.)
d). Heat the beaker with Nitrocellulose in a water bath for about 6 – 7 hours.
e). Stir the Nitrocellulose of the beaker with a glass rod from time to time.
f). After 6 – 7 hours place the beakers in the desiccator for 10-15 mins.
g). Take the weight dry beaker ( C).
\[Solid Content (%) = (Weight C - Weight A) / (Weight B - Weight A) * 100\]
How is nitrocellulose stored?
1. NC Use safety equipment such as masks and gloves when handling.
2. Covered NC Should not be allowed to dry out under any circumstances.
3. N.C. Should not be subjected to heat, direct sunlight, impact, or abrasion.
4. Should not be allowed to come into contact with alkaline or highly acidic materials.
5. During unloading the drum should not fall directly on the hard surface and bump into each other Should not happen.
6. The drum should not be rolled or dragged over concrete.
7. Use only non-sparking metals for tools. For example brass, and bronze.
8. N.C. Do not leave the drum in an open area.
9. N.C. Should be stored in a level and cool area.
10. Smoking, matches, and other open lights or flames are prohibited near storage and processing areas.
11. Avoid any operation where static electricity may be generated.
12. Adequate ventilation is essential in the storage and processing area.
13. Adequate fire extinguishing provisions should be made in the storage and processing area.
14. N.C. The lightning conductor should be provided in the store.
15. The store building should always be locked and entry of unauthorized persons prohibited.
16. Drums should not be opened in the store area.
17. N.C. Drum covers should always be tightly closed before and after use.
20. Solvents should be poured into the mixing machine carefully so that there is no spillage on the floor.
21. Ensure that the drum is emptied at the end after use and completely NC The drum residue is suspended only after emptying.
22. The drum should not be allowed to be stored for a long period and the first-in be issued on a first-out (FIFO) basis.
