1.0 OBJECTIVE
To lay down the procedure for MELTING POINT operation.
2.0 SCOPE
This procedure applies to Quality Control Department.
3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
3.1 QC chemists to prepare and follow the SOP.
3.2 Head – QA & QC for implementation of SOP.
4.0 PROCEDURE
4.1 Fill the sample in capillary tubes.
4.2 Place the filled capillary tube in the melting point apparatus.
4.3 Switch on the Melting point apparatus.4.4 Set the heating rate and stirrer speed.
4.5 Keep a close watch on a sample in the capillary tube.
4.6 As the sample starts melting decrease the heating rate and stirrer speed.
4.7 Note temperature when the sample slip-on upper side means completely melts.
4.8 This is the melting point of the material under observation.

DETERMINATION OF MELTING POINT
APPARATUS
a). Hot Plate.
b). 250 ml beaker.
c). Finger clamps and stands.
d). Thermometer.
e). Wide Mouth Test Tube
PROCEDURE:a). Put a beaker on a hot plate with half-filled water.
b). Now take the sample in a test tube and put it in the middle of the beaker, tightened with a finger clamp.
c). Now take a Thermometer and put it in the middle of the test tube, tightened with a finger clamp.
d). Now switch on the hot plate.
e). The temperature gradually heat the beaker on a hot plate till the sample becomes Liquid, Note this temperature.
f). The range of the temperature from the initial meeting to fully melting temperature, denotes the melting range of the Sample.
The melting point of sample:-………….oC
Melting range of sample:-............oC to.............. oC
2. Thermometer which is put in the test tube does not touch the bottom of the test tube.
3. If the sample has less than 100 oC melting point, then we can use water, If a sample has more than100 C melting point, then we cannot use water, whereas, we will use a solvent that has a boiling point of more than the sample’s Melting Point.
