Determination of Oxirane Oxygen Content Percentage

The percent of the oxygen (oxirane) absorbed by an unsaturated raw material during epoxidation. Determination of Oxirane Oxygen Content and Preparation of 0.1N HBr Solution and standrazition.

>Determination Of Inhibitor Content?

 APPARATUS

 a). 100 ml conical flask.

b). 10 ml and 5 ml pipette.

c). 50 ml burette.

 REAGENTS

a). Glacial Acetic Acid.

b). Benzene.

c). Crystal violet Indicator.

d). 0.1 N HBr. Solution.

e). Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate (Lab Grade)

Preparation of Crystal Violet Indicator:

Take 0.1 gm of Crystal Violet powder and dissolve it in 100 ml of Glacial Acetic Acid.

Preparation of Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate solution Solution:

Take 0.4 gm of  Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate and dissolve it in 10 ml of Glacial Acetic Acid a shake well with a slight warmth to get a clear solution.

DETERMINATION OF OXIRANE OXYGEN CONTENT

Preparation of 0.1N HBr Solution:

Take 16.0 gm of  HBr (Hydrobromic acid) (48%) Solution dissolve it in 1000 ml of Glacial Acetic Acid and standardize with Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate solution.

STANDARDIZATION OF 0.1 N HBr Solution

Take 10 ml of Potassium Hydrogen Phthalate solution in 100 ml of the conical flask. Then add 5-6 drops of Crystal Violet indicator. Now titrate this solution with 0.1 N HBr Solution.

Calculation of 0.1N HBr:

Normality of 0.1N HBr Solution  = Weight of Phthalate

                           0.2024 X V1

V1 = Volume of HBr Solution used.

PROCEDURE

a.) Weigh about 0.3 – 0.5 gm of sample in 100 ml of a flask.

b.) Now add 10 ml and 5 ml of Acetic Acid, and shake well.

c.) Now add 5-6 drops of Crystal Violet Indicator and titrate with 0.1 N HBr Solution, till the Dark Blue color changes from Dark Green to Green.

Calculation of Oxirane Oxygen Content

Oxirane Oxygen Content (%)  =   V x N x 1.6

                            W

V = Volume of HBr Solution used.

N = Normality of HBr Solution.

W = Weight of sample taken.

>Assay Procedures active oxygen, ammonium persulfate, potassium persulfate, sodium persulfate
